History of Vidya Dairy

The SMC College of Dairy Science, Anand (established in 1961) is a pioneering dairy education center of international repute at Anand Agricultural University, for imparting undergraduate dairy technology education. The college is actively engaged in catering technical manpower for the Indian Dairy Industry. Till the year 1993 undergraduate Dairy Technology students of the SMC college of Dairy Science, Anand underwent the in-plant training in dairies scattered all over the country. This made it difficult for the college authorities / dairy authorities to closely monitor the students’ progress during the training, leaving them woefully short of ‘hands on’ experience. Because of this the students did not or could not take their training more effectively. The lacuna in the Dairy education system was churned by the great dairy visionary Dr. V. Kurien into conceiving Vidya Dairy to fulfill the dream of providing excellent training facilities to the students of SMC College of Dairy Science, AAU Anand. In concurrence with the joint recommendations of National Dairy Development Board, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (NDDB- ICAR) Panel, the programme was modified from B.Sc. (Dairy Technology) to B.Tech (Dairy Technology). With this vision, Vidya Dairy was established in February 1994 with a financial assistance of15 crores from NDDB. Vidya Dairy has also become a Company w.e.f. 10thJune

Vidya Dairy was started as an innovative approach to inculcate professional and social skills in the graduating B.Tech (Dairy Technology) students of SMC college of Dairy Science, Anand Agricultural University, Anand. This was made possible by providing one year of hands-on experience in Dairy Plant Operations & Management Courses I & II.

Genesis of Vidya Dairy

Vidya Dairy is a unique and pioneering organization of its kind in the country as well as in Asia. Since its inception, it offers rigorous training to the students in Dairy Process and Business Operations, Quality Assurance, Commercial Functions and Environmental Protection. This innovative and need-based institute was established with a very special objective of imparting Quality Dairy Education i.e. to provide one year full practical work experience in a commercially viable business environment to the B.Tech (Dairy Technology) students of SMC College of Dairy Science, Anand Agricultural University, Anand. Since its inception, Vidya Dairy has achieved expected performance with respect to Students’ Training, its Operations and Product and Process Development. It has also promoted Industry Academia Interface through organizing Short Term Training Programmes in association with Faculty of Dairy Science, Anand

The dairy has an installed capacity to process one lakh Litres of milk per day and is currently processing about 95,000 litres of milk per day. The raw chilled milk is received from the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Ltd. Anand i.e AMUL Dairy through the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMFL). The dairy has an asset of indigenous and imported equipments and machineries to process milk and to manufacture a range of dairy products, viz. Ghee, Ice Cream, Paneer, Cheese varieties as per national and international standards. For providing viability, a part of the liquid milk market was set aside for Vidya Dairy by the Amul Dairy, Anand from its own market. GCMMFL markets the milk products manufactured by the dairy under the brand name of “AMUL”.

Objectives

  • The main purpose of Vidya Dairy is to provide one year hands-on-experience to the students of SMC College of Dairy Science, AAU, Anand pursuing the studies of B.Tech (Dairy Technology).
  • Vidya Dairy is also engaged in milk marketing in Anand and its adjoining townships, manufacture and marketing of a variety of milk products like Ice Cream, Ghee, Paneer and Cheese.
  • To conduct short term external training programmes to train the workforce of Dairy Industry.
  • Close association with the Plant Process Development wing of the NDDB and GCMMFL in carrying out research and development activities linked to milk processing and product development.
    MISSION:
    Imparting skills in a commercially self-sustainable environment to develop professionalism in graduating Dairy Technologists so as to provide useful resources to manage the dairy industry.
    MANDATE:
    Impart Hands on experience to the students and inculcate work culture of Quality, Productivity, Energy Conservation and Environment Protection; Maintain commercial viability & contribute towards product and process development.
